Australia and Japan have agreed to work together on an international response to North Korea's recent rocket missile launch.

Australia and Japan have agreed to work together on an international response to North Korea's recent rocket missile launch.

Australia's foreign minister, Bob Carr, on Sunday met with his Japanese counterpart, Fumio Kishida, in Sydney.

The visit was Mr Kishida's first overseas trip since Japan's new government took office in December.

Mr Carr described the day's talks as productive, and said the two countries discussed Australia's role on the United Nations Security Council, as well as North Korea's missile launch.

"We hope to be able to work closely with Japan when it comes to shaping a response on the security council to that unsatisfactory and illegal behaviour," Mr Carr said.

Mr Kishida also expressed his sympathy to those affected by bushfires across south-eastern Australia.
