Officials in Afghanistan say five civilians and two police officers have been killed by roadside bombs in the country's troubled south.

A family of four and their driver died when their car hit an improvised bomb in Helmand province's Khanishin district late on Saturday.

Two police officers were killed on the same day in a similar bomb attack in Musa Qala district, another restive part of Helmand where insurgents have an active presence.

The officers were on a routine patrol when their pick-up truck was blown up.

A local official says Taliban insurgents are being blamed for the attacks.
