American singer-songwriter Tom Petty reportedly suffers cardiac arrest

The musician, best known for his hit singles Free Fallin' and Learning to Fly, reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest and was found unconscious at his California home.

American musician Tom Petty is reportedly clinging to life after suffering a cardiac arrest and being found unconscious at his home in California.

US media had earlier reported the 66-year-old rocker had died, but there are now conflicting reports.

The Los Angeles Police Department appeared to have played a part in the confusion, and apologised on Twitter for "inadvertently" providing information to some media outlets.

The legendary rocker has sold more than 80 million records worldwide and is best known for his hit singles Free Fallin' and Learning to Fly.
