More than 100 New York City firefighters were needed to tackle a fire which ripped through a six-storey apartment building in upper Manhattan.

More than 100 firefighters have battled a raging fire that burned through an apartment building in upper Manhattan.

Heavy smoke and orange flames could be seen pouring through the building's roof, with strong wind making the blaze difficult to contain.

The fire broke out about 3:00pm on Friday (local time) in a six-storey building in Harlem, according to the New York Post.

Debris could be seen falling from the building as firefighters scaled ladders to battle the blaze.

No injuries have been reported.
