Seven people are taken to hospital and nine others treated by paramedics after a hot air balloon landed heavily during a flight over Victoria's Yarra Valley.

Seven people have been taken to hospital after a hot air balloon landed heavily during a flight over Victoria's Yarra Valley.

Emergency services were called to Dixon's Creek, north-east of Melbourne, shortly after 7:00am.

The balloon landed in a paddock and aerial footage showed the basket on its side in the grass.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics assessed 16 people at the scene, and seven were then taken to the Royal Melbourne, Box Hill and Maroondah hospitals.

They suffered a range of injuries, including back, neck and ankle injuries.

The flight was conducted by Go Wild Ballooning, which offers balloon rides around the Yarra Valley, Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the cause of the crash was yet to be determined, and it would be investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
