Australia urged to take advantage of China's rising middle class

Updated 16 March 2012, 18:06 AEDT

New Zealand's first female prime minister has urged both Australia and her own country to engage with China at a more sophisticated level and focus less on exports of raw materials.

Dame Jenny Shipley now sits on the board of a large Chinese bank and visits the country regularly.

She worries that neither Australia nor New Zealand has done enough planning about how to serve China's new middle class.

Dame Jenny has been speaking in Sydney to the Australia China Business Council.

Presenter: Brendan Trembath

Speaker: Dame Jenny Shipley, former New Zealand Prime Minister
