Australian Greens want visa for Pacific climate refugees

Posted 5 August 2010, 16:23 AEST

The Australian Greens have released an election policy on the Pacific, calling for a new humanitarian visa for Pacific islanders threatened by climate change and a fairer approach to free trade negotiations with the region.

The Greens human rights spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young says Australia has fallen short of its responsibility to be a good neighbour to the region. She says Australia's aid budget should be increased to point-seven of a per cent of GDP, much higher than the commitments of either the Australian Labor or Liberal parties. And she says a lot more Australian effort should go to improving the sorry regional story on maternal and child mortality.

Our correspondent in Canberra Linda Mottram has been speaking to Senator Hanson-Young.

Presenter: Linda Mottram

Speaker: Sarah Hanson-Young, Australian Senator for The Greens
