An Australian researcher will head to Papua New Guinea tomorrow on a mission to preserve PNG's eight hundred different languages.

University of Melbourne Associate Professor Steven Bird plans to record and translate traditional songs and stories from around the country using mobile phones.

The project builds on the Professor's earlier work, where he trained 100 students in three PNG universities to record their ancestral languages, using voice recorders.

Presenter: Geraldine Coutts

Speaker: Associate Professor Steven Bird, a researcher from the University of Melbourne
