In Beijing, reports of the toxic smog have made way for more colourful tidings of Chinese New Year preparations.

This weekend the Year of the Snake slides in from the Year of the Dragon, and while the doomsayers are already predicting some venomous financial times, others have already been blessed with some good fortune.

Among them, 20-year-old Australian singer Clarissa Belanti, who has gone from studying music in the Chinese capital to singing for an estimated audience of over a billion people on Chinese State television as part of the New Year countdown.
