'Blood diamond' trade flourishes in Indian city

Posted 24 August 2011, 4:40 AEST

An increasing number of so-called 'blood diamonds' from Zimbabwe and Congo are finding their way to the Indian city of Surat in the western state of Gujarat, the diamond cutting and polishing capital of the world.

It is estimated that 10 out of 11 of the world's diamonds are cut and polished in Surat.

The continued smuggling from conflict zones is occurring despite the efforts of the Kimberley Process, the UN-endorsed agency that monitors the movement of blood diamonds.
