Scientists are calling it a "major discovery" which could boost the value of the world's rice crops by 25 per cent.

The International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines has uncovered genetic information that could lead to so-called "chalk free" rice.

Chalky rice breaks easily and therefore is harder to mill.
