Concerns fly about Fiji Airways trademark application

In Fiji, social media is buzzing with concerns about plans by the national airline, Air Pacific, to trademark 15 traditional masi designs.

In June this year, Air Pacific will revert to the name Fiji Airways, and the airline's new logo has been designed by local masi artist Makereta Matemosi, drawing on traditional Fijian cultural heritage.  But many people argue that such cultural knowledge should not be trademarked for commercial gain.

There are also complex legal issues at play, as Salvin Nand from the University of Fiji's law school explains.
