Former Fiji Prime Minister breaks silence, calls for elections

Posted 28 April 2009, 15:20 AEST

Fiji's former Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaundhry is publicly calling on interim leader Commodore Frank Bainamara to hold democratic elections.

Fiji's political leaders have been largely silent since the 1997 constitution was abolished earlier this month and replaced by emergency regulations banning media coverage of the country's political situation. But Mr Chaudhry says the interim Government is stalling efforts to return to democracy and needs to be pressured to resume steps, as promised.
