The National Secretary of the Fiji Trades Union Congress, Felix Anthony, has been arrested.

In a brief phone call with Pacific Beat, Mr Anthony confirmed he has just been taken into custody by Fiji Police.

He was unable to provide any further details, and could not continue to speak to us.

The FTUC's President, Daniel Urai, was also arrested last week at he arrived in the country from Australia.

He has not yet been charged.

Fiji law provides for detention without charge for up to ten days.

Presenter: Bruce Hill

Speaker: Attar Singh, Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions general secretary

SINGH: Well, I'm I'm um, I suppose one would say that it's not be surprised given that Daniel Urai, the president of that organisation was arrested about a week ago now and from what we understand from media reports locally, he's still in detention. We still don't know what the reasons for the arrests were except that he had returned from the meeting in Perth.

Felix, I'm not aware whether he was at the meeting in Perth, but he was also away overseas somewhere in one of the international meetings. But I had bumped into him during the week, the employment tribunal very briefly and this is the first we're learning of his arrest as well.

HILL: Why would you think the government has arrested him?

SINGH: Well, the talk amongst workers and unions is that these people have been it is linked to the campaign against the employment regulation that has been brought about. There will be a new national industry decree and that it seems that the government is not too happy about that campaign and also the fact that the matters have been complained internationally and also to with the ILO. We are not aware of any other issues that may give rise to such arrests and detentions

HILL: What do you think the eventual charge against him is going to be?

SINGH: Well, we don't know. I mean unless we know what the issue is, what they have had him arrested for, we cannot even start guessing what the charges would be.,

HILL: What affect are these arrests of Felix Anthony today and Daniel Urai last weekend having on the trade union movement in Fiji as a whole?

SINGH: Well, the union movement in Fiji has been under attack for awhile as you know and always with various legislations and decrees and now this sort of arrest and detention of leaders of trade unions and obviously this is having a combined affect of weakening the trade unions and raising concern amongst workers which perhaps is the overall intention.

HILL: With the arrest of Daniel Urai and now Felix Anthony, from the Fiji Trade's Union Congress, do you feel that perhaps you yourself as head of the Fiji Islands Confederation of Trade Unions, you might be next to be arrested?

SINGH: Well, I mean no one can say that. I mean all trade unions now who have been raising views on behalf of members in trade unions are vulnerable and in that sense, if people have been arrested and detained for the purpose for reasons for speaking out, but as it stands we don't know really what the reasons are for the arrest of both Daniel Urai and now as you say, Felix Anthony. We need to find out more about it before we can comment further.

HILL: If trade union leaders are being arrested, is there anything that the unions themselves can do, perhaps go on strike in protest?

SINGH: That's a very silly proposition you're making Bruce to me. In a country like Fiji, where strikes are not possible and where the country's controlled totally by a military regime, that's totally impossible.
