The world's best players gather in Melbourne for the first grand slam tournament of the season.

Over two weeks of competition, Melbourne is home to some of the best tennis in the world - and to some of the greatest tennis fans as well.

This year, the Australian Open is shining the spotlight back on the region.

For the first time, a special delegation of Chinese ballboys and ballgirls have been trained and brought over to Australia to help with retrieving duties at the Melbourne Park courts.

It comes as the first Chinese male player prepares for his Grand Slam debut this week. Wu Di hails from the same home town as women's favourite Li Na, and is part of a massive uptake and interest in the sport in the world's most populous country.

Radio Australia will be following the action throughout the upcoming weeks on air, online and in pictures. Here are some of our favourite images from the action so far.
