The Australian government's controversial announcement last week that it was ready to lift its ban on selling uranium to India, may have been premature.

The Australian offer is on condition that New Delhi finalises its nuclear deal with the U-S. But just when Canberra and Washington thought the historic pact was signed and sealed, the Indian government is being forced to rethink its position. The country's powerful communist party is threatening to quit the ruling coalition if New Delhi goes ahead with the deal.
