As we know, next week the leaders of the member nations of the Pacific Islands Forum will meet in Vanuatu.

It's already public knowledge that Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard will not be attending due to the election campaign here, and neither will Solomon Islands Prime Minister Derek Sikua for the same reason.

But it is still likely to be an interesting gathering, especially given the meeting held last week in Fiji, which as attended by many of the Pacific leaders, who will be at the Forum. Fiji won't as it is still suspended, and it's interim government says its meeting was truly Pacific.

So what can we expect? That's a topic which has been up for discussion in Sydney at the Lowy Institute for International Policy in front of a distinguished panel.

Presenter: Campbell Cooney

Speaker: Jemima Garrett, Radio Australia's Pacific Economic and Business reporter in Sydney
