He's one of the world's most famous dancers. But, in many ways, Li Cunxin is perhaps better known for being one of the world's most famous defectors.

About 18 years ago, the Chinese ballet dancer, whose story inspired the book and film "Mao's Last Dancer", caused a diplomatic stand-off for seeking political asylum while on tour in the United States.

He followed his heart to Australia and now - he's in the running to be named Australian of the Year, for his work as artistic director of the Queensland Ballet.
