Vanuatu's Opposition Leader, Edward Natapei has today become the country's interim prime minister.

This follows a ruling by Chief Justice Vincent Lunabek, that the election of prime minister, Sato Kilman, six months ago was null and void.

The constitutional dilemma began at the end of last year when Sato Kilman, who was then Prime Minister Natapei's deputy, succeeded in a motion of no confidence against Mr Natapei.

A vote was then taken and Mr Kilman was sworn-in as prime minister, but without following the constitution provision which required that the prime minister be elected by secret ballot.

Today's court ruling means Edward Natapei is now interim prime minister and his former ministers have become interim ministers until a new prime minister is elected.

Mr Natapei says he's pleased the judge upheld his claim.
