Nauru elects speaker who pushes for new president

Late Friday Nauru will find out if it is going to get a new president and functioning parliament, or if the deadlock which has stopped the political process there since April will continue.

Earlier this week Aloysius Amwano accepted the nomination to be elected as speaker of parliament. But before he accepted he demanded that the current caretaker president, Marcus Stephen, stand down from office.
