PNG Policeman kills detainee in cell

Updated 15 February 2012, 13:08 AEDT

A policeman in Papua New Guinea has shot and killed a 15 year-old detainee in a police cell in Oro Province.

The police officer was believed to be under the influence of alcohol when he shot the young detainee at point-blank range.

Earlier this year a United Nations investigation found a high incidence of police brutality and torture at PNG police cells, and urged the government to address the issue.

Oro's Provincial Police Commander, Micah Anawei says the police officer has been arrested and charged for wilful murder.
