Support for regional asylum seeker system

Posted 30 December 2011, 12:48 AEDT

The most recent asylum seeker boat tragedy off the coast of Java spurred Australian politicians back into debate over the country's border protection policy.

Several strategies for stemming the number of boat arrivals were raised, including resurrecting the failed Malaysia solution. Former department of immigration secretary, John Menadue, thinks politicians should take this opportunity to reconsider the Malaysia deal as the first step towards a regional asylum agreement. He now heads the Centre for Policy Development and says it doesn't matter where processing happens as long as it's fair and efficient.

Presenter: Emma Younger

Speakers: John Menadue, director of Australia's Centre for Policy Development and a former secretary of the department of immigration
