Third gender to be legalised in Australia

Australia will recognise a third sex category from July 1, that neither fits into the female nor male description of gender.

The introduction of gender "X" means some people may be classified as indeterminate, unspecified or intersex.

The Australian government says the change will bring a practical improvement to the everyday lives of transgender, intersex and gender-diverse people.

But Estelle Asmodelle, an Australian model, actress and musician also known as Australia's first legal transsexual, says the change doesn't go far enough to cover the transgender community. And it in fact, could be a step backwards, as transgender people do not want to be recognised as an "X" category.
