UNAIDS warns PNG against complacency

Posted 27 August 2010, 17:15 AEST

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS -- or UNAIDS -- has urged Papua New Guinea to educate its young population to help stem the epidemic in the country.

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe says PNG is more likely moving towards the HIV / AIDS infection trend of many African countries. Latest figures released by the PNG National Aids Council show the infection rate has gone down to 1 per cent from 1.2 per cent.

And Mr Sidibe says UNAIDS is impressed with the support given by the PNG government, donor partners and non-governmental agencies in addressing the spread of the virus. But he says there's no room for complacency in containing the epidemic.
