UNICEF calls for strong education funding in Pacific

Posted 12 February 2010, 10:27 AEST

The Regional Director of the United Nations' Children's Agency says maintaining government funding for education and training should be a priority, despite tough economic times.

Young people in the Pacific are facing a 3-way hit from the global economic crisis. Falling government revenue can result in cuts to schools and health services, reduced family income means less chance of paying school fees, and the increased likelihood of family breakdown also makes children more vulnerable.

UNICEF' Regional Director for East Asia and the Pacific, Anupama Rao Singh, is in Vanuatu for the Pacific Conference on the Human Face of the Global Economic Crisis.
