Updated 8 January 2013, 11:09 AEST

In the next 24 hours the US president Barack Obama will nominate his choice for the next US Secretary of Defence position.

According to a leaked Adminstration source, the president will nominate Chuck Hagel, a former Republican Senator from the state of Nebraska.

Hagel was well-known as a critic of the former Bush Adminstration for its handling of the Iraq War.

Senator Hagel has also made comments about Israel and Iran that have many in the US Foreign Policy establishment nervous.
