Heatwave: Australian emergency services on alert

Updated 3 January 2013, 21:48 AEDT

Australia's emergency services will be on stand-by tomorrow and the weekend, in anticipation of extreme hot weather and fire conditions.

Temperatures in the south and south-east of the country will be well into the 40s celsius, and the "catastrophic" fire warning introduced after the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009 is in place in several regions.

The Australian Red Cross wants people in areas at risk of extreme heat or fire to adopt a four-step readiness plan.

Presenter: Laura Tchilinguirian

Speaker: John Richardson, Emergency Services Co-ordinator, Australian Red Cross
