Leaked UN report says it failed to protect civilians in Sri Lanka

Updated 14 November 2012, 22:05 AEST

A leaked draft report on the UN's role in the last months of Sri Lanka's civil war in 2009 says the organisation failed its mandate to protect civilians.

In an all out effort over several months the Sri Lankan army wiped out the last of the Tamil Tigers amid massive civilian losses.

The win bolstered the government of Mahinda Rajapaska which continues to deny it shared responsibility for tens of thousands of civilian deaths.

The internal UN review concludes the events in Sri Lanka mark a "grave failure" of the UN to provide assistance and to inform the world.
