Police in the Philippines are preparing to deport captured Australian Islamist cleric Musa Cerantonio following his arrest last week.

Musa Cerantonio, who has a significant online following calling for jihad in the Middle East, was arrested in Cebu in the Philippines on Friday.

Local authorities have confirmed that the influential Islamic cleric was promoting jihadism to Muslim Filipinos, including the Islamic militant group Abu Sayyaf.

He's now being held at an immigration detention centre and will be deported to Australia where he's likely to face charges.
