The man who set Fiji's coup culture in motion has quit politics.

Major General Sitiveni Rabuka says a loss of his traditional support bases and a change in the style of leadership in Fiji, are among the reasons he's quit.

But General Rabuka would not say if he will withdraw his appliation to join the Constituent Assembly.

Major-general Rabuka led Fiji's first coup in 1987, but says he feels his services are no longer required.
