Updated 24 December 2012, 22:21 AEST

Flooding caused by a week of heavy rain has left at least 42 people dead and nine others missing in Sri Lanka.

The floods have also forced more than 17,000 people out of their homes in northern, central and eastern parts of the country.

The situation is expected to get worse, with around half the country's 71 main reservoirs full to overflowing.
