Australia's former foreign minister Gareth Evans described it as a "harrowing, compelling and ultimately inspiring story of human survival.

Surviving Year Zero is a book by someone who survived the brutal Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, between 1975 and 1979 - four years which altered the nation's modern psyche.

Savannora Ieng says the UN-backed special court to hear the human rights crimes committed by the Khmer Rouge, only went a little way towards national healing.

He says ultimately, moving forward is often down to the question of personal choice.
