Tapping the business potential of cooperatives

13 million members in Australia, one billion worldwide, controlling more than two trillion dollars worth of business across all kinds of industries - cooperatives have been around for a long time.

Now there's a push to expand the business model even further.

Supporters say cooperatives or mutual associations provide more jobs, last longer and did better during the global financial crisis than stock controlled companies.

Yet last week's G20 business meeting in Sydney was the first time they were represented at such a high profile summit.
