Thailand introduces female only carriages in safety campaign

Updated 29 July 2014, 11:55 AEST

In Thailand, the ruling military is about to introduce female-only carriages on the nation's long haul trains.

It comes after the rape and murder of a young Thai girl earlier this month.

The crime shook the nation, and led to a social media campaign for the death penalty for convicted rapists.

Alcohol has already been banned on the trains popular among tourists.
