Ukraine fighting continues to hamper MH17 probe

Updated 29 July 2014, 11:55 AEST

Fierce fighting in eastern Ukraine has forced Dutch and Australian investigators to abandon attempts to reach the MH-17 crash site for a second day.

The civilian death toll in the conflict is rising, with the UN saying nearly 800 people have been killed since mid-April, and more than two-thousand wounded.

As the fighting raged, Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop was in talks with officials in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

Ms Bishop says investigators will try to reach the site again in the next 24 hours.
