The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay has expressed concerns over the lack of involvement of civil society, in drawing up the ASEAN Declaration of Human Rights.

Speaking to Asia Pacific, at the close of the Bali Democracy Forum, Ms Pillay said the Declaration should be postponed, because of the inadequate involvement of public and civilian groups.

Regional human rights organisations wrote to ASEAN leaders to point out that the Declaration fell short of international standards, as they were subject to "national and regional contexts."
