The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed the former East Timorese president, Jose Ramos-Horta, as his special representative to Guinea-Bissau.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner will assume his new post in the troubled West African nation at the end of this month.

Dr Ramos-Horta is taking over from Joseph Mutaboba, a Rwandan diplomat who was asked to leave Guinea-Bissau two months ago by the civilian government, over allegations he had been seeking to restore the country's former prime minister Carlos Gomes to power.
