US Secretary of State on the next steps in Asia Pacific policy

Updated 15 August 2014, 16:00 AEST

The American Secretary of State John Kerry has used a major address at the end of his five-day tour of Myanmar, Australia and Solomon Islands to set a broader agenda for Washington's relations with the Asia Pacific region.

In a speech delivered at the East West Centre in Hawaii, Secretary Kerry sought to take the focus off America's strategic rivalry with China, to place the emphasis instead on co-operation in everything, from economic issues to climate change and human rights.
