Australia, Indonesia sign defence cooperation agreement

Updated 5 September 2012, 17:40 AEST

Australia and Indonesia have reached a deal to improve co-operation for the search and rescue of asylum seekers whose vessels sink during the dangerous journey to Christmas Island.

Under the new rules of engagement, Australian aircraft may be given rapid clearance to operate in Indonesian Airspace.

The two countries will also be beefing up the military relationship by co-signing a Defence Cooperation Arrangement.

Australia's Defence Minister Stephen Smith says the new accord will provide a more formal structure to the military relationship between the two countries.
