Australia urged to pressure Pakistan on Hazaras

Updated 26 February 2013, 16:16 AEDT

The Refugee Council of Australia is calling for the Australian government to increase pressure on Pakistan to stop violence against the Hazara community.

Pakistan has historically been a place of refuge for Afghan Hazaras fleeing violence in their home country. However, this is increasingly not the case.

Hazaras are Shia Muslims and often face persecution Sunni death squads in Pakistan, their distinctive East Asia facial features making them an easy target.

A recent example came last week with the bombing in Quetta targeting the Shia community, killing 81 people.
