Australian government apologises to defence force abuse victims

Updated 26 November 2012, 16:02 AEDT

The Australian government has been wrestling with the issue of sexual abuse and other forms of abuse within the defence force for well over a year.

Now it's decided to offer a formal apology to the victims of abuse, and it's setting up a task force led by a retired judge to implement a range of responses, including a compensation scheme.

The moves follow a recent government commissioned report by the law firm DLA Piper which has identified hundreds of credible abuse allegations going back many decades.
