Call for Commonwealth to probe push to impeach Sri Lanka's top judge

Updated 10 December 2012, 16:25 AEDT

Sri Lanka's main opposition party is calling on the Commonwealth to investigate the impeachment of the country's chief justice.

The United National Party spokesman and former foreign minister Mangala Samaraweera made the call a day after chief justice Shirani Bandranayake was found guilty on three charges of professional misconduct.

The findings were made by a parliamentary panel against the nation's first female chief justice.

She now faces the threat of being dismissed if the majority in the 225-member Parliament votes for her removal.
