China looms large in Australia's defence plans

China is again looming large in Australia's defence plans.

The Australian newspaper has obtained a leaked draft copy of next year's Australian defence white paper which it says highlights China military expansion and its role in changing the balance of power in the Pacific .

It says Australia will need to navigate the US-China relationship in the decades ahead as that relationship changes the strategic balance in the Indo-Pacific.

But the draft makes no firm commitment for more defence spending and warns future constraints on military spending will be "sustained and serious".
