At least 112 people have died in a fire that swept through a garment factory in Bangladesh over the weekend.

It took firefighters several hours to control the blaze that broke out on the ground floor of the nine storey Tazreen Fashion Plant, 30 kilometres north of the capital Dhaka.

Some 1000 workers are believed to have been in the building at the time, with a number jumping to their death from upper storey windows as they tried to escape the blaze.
