Japan readies for weekend polls

Updated 14 December 2012, 15:14 AEST

This weekend, millions of Japanese go to the polls to elect a new government.

If the opinion polls are right, the election will see the return of the country's conservative forces led by former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, a man known as a hardline nationalist.

It could see Japan take a more assertive stance with China and a restart of the nuclear reactors abandoned after the meltdowns at Fukushima.
