The surprise announcement of the Pope Benedict's resignation has set the Catholic world reflecting on his legacy.

The pontiff's eight years at the head of the Catholic Church has been dominated by allegations the church covered up the sexual abuse of children by priests and in Asia there have been conflicts between the Vatican and the Governments of China and Vietnam over local control.
