S.Korean officials announce successful Naro rocket launch

Updated 31 January 2013, 15:11 AEDT

It's a case of third time's a charm for South Korea, which has succeeded in launching a satellite into orbit following two failed attempts in 2010 and 2009.

South Korean officials say the launch vehicle lifted off from South Korea's Naro space centre on the south coast and successfully went through stage separation before entering orbit.

But the launch has angered North Korea, which launched a rocket last month, in an exercise condemned by the UN Security Council as a disguised missile test.

The future of South Korea's rocket program was among many factors riding on the success of the launch.
