US officials have described the two-day summit between President Barack Obama and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, as "unique, positive and constructive".

But what do the talks reveal about how both countries see their role in Asia, and indeed the world?

Hovering over the summit was a vexing question for both sides - whether China's rise means an inevitable clash with the United States, which Mr Obama sees as a Pacific power.
