Suu Kyi calls for India to stand by Burma on its path to democracy

Updated 16 November 2012, 14:53 AEST

Burma's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has called on India to stand by her country as it journeys, hopefully, through its last phase towards democracy.

Ms Suu Kyi sees India's leaders, especially Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, as her spiritual and political guardians especially during her dark days of incarceration.

After 40 years, she is on a 5 day visit to a country that was once her home where she spent time as a schoolgirl.

Correspondent: Kanaha Sabapathy

Speakers: Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma's opposition leader; Dr Srinath Raghavan, Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi; Dr Tint Swe, former NLD member of parliament
