The leaders of Australia and Thailand have met in Canberra to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Julia Gillard and Yingluck Shinawatra acknowledged a special link as the first female Prime Ministers of their respective countries.

As well as enhanced economic ties, they plan to promote the political and economic empowerment of women and girls through a new political exchange program.

The visit comes as Thai politics once again threatens to become polarised over the Ms Yingluck's brother and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra
